How To Find Quality Paid Guest Post Links

by:  Kosta Hristov

One of the main reasons guest posting strategies fail is that people underestimate the risks and don’t put anywhere near enough effort into establishing proper quality controls.

See, guest posting involves a lot more than just finding a website owner willing to add a blog post with a link to your site–and having a large budget also doesn’t guarantee that a guest post backlink will deliver results.

What I’m going to show you in this post is why paid guest posts are so effective, how to ensure you have great quality control, and what factors influence the costs.

Let’s start with a critical question.

How Do Guest Posts Benefit Your Website?

In my experience with paid guest posting, there are four main benefits that you get from an effective guest blogging strategy:

  • Improved SEO Rankings
  • Opportunities For Direct Referral Traffic
  • Establish Brand And Topical Authority
  • Networking With Website Owners

It’s critical that you understand these factors before you start guest posting so that you know what types of guest posts will deliver these benefits.

Let’s take a closer look.

1. Improved SEO Rankings

As an SEO, most of what you do involves getting more visitors to our sites, and Google remains the single best source of high-quality website traffic.

Paid SEO Guest Posts

While there are regular reports of “backlinks don’t work anymore”, there is simply no credible evidence of that being the case.

Google and all other search engines still have backlinks at the core of their algorithms–and that means that a high-quality paid guest post will boost your search rankings and drive more organic traffic to your site.

The problem is that the typical low-quality and mass guest blogging approach from 10 years ago doesn’t work anymore.

But more on that shortly.

2. Opportunities For Direct Referral Traffic

Another very valuable and often underrated benefit is the fact that the right paid guest post opportunities can deliver a ton of
extra referral traffic

If you find a high-traffic website that also actively promotes guest post content, then many readers will click on that backlink and land on your website.

When you’re dealing with such guest post opportunities, it’s vital that you carefully plan the content and page you’re linking to because there is a good chance that you can convert some of that traffic into sales.

Here’s an example.

Let’s say you’re an affiliate in the health and fitness niche, and you have a paid guest blogging opportunity on a blog with over 500,000 monthly visitors.

Writing a high-quality article on a topic related to one of your affiliate promotions is a great way to get readers to click from the guest post to your site and bring them further down the sales funnel.

This approach can even cover the costs of your backlink strategy, but such opportunities are more difficult to find.

I’ll cover this in more detail below.

3. Establish Brand And Topical Authority

One of the more difficult ranking factors to establish on your website relates to
E-E-A-T (Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness).

While creating valuable content covering all angles of your niche is a critical step in demonstrating E-E-A-T, proving that you’re an authority and trustworthy is tricky.

One way of achieving this is by getting contextual backlinks from highly niche-relevant guest posting sites.

The more relevant the guest website is to your niche and the more organic traffic it gets from search engines, the more of that trust and authority will flow to your website.

4. Networking With Website Owners

Paid Guest Post

You should also approach paid guest posting as a great way to network with website owners and influencers.

Take the opportunity to get to know the people you reach out to and ask to connect on social platforms.

There’s a great chance that these people will have other websites in different niches, know other people offering guest posting services, or have a significant social media following that will open other opportunities.

Never look at a guest post opportunity as a one-and-done task.

Risks And Challenges Of Paid Guest Posts

Now that we’ve covered the benefits, it’s important to understand that without the right approach, paid guest blogging can backfire.

I’ve been doing SEO for over ten years, and my company has specialized in finding guest post opportunities for over 7 years.

From that experience, I can tell you about the most important risk factors.

Google’s Stance On Guest Posts

Google has been trying to clamp down on paid guest posts for years, and there are guidelines that specify that taking payment for an article that includes a backlink falls under
Google’s spam policy

But how can the algorithm determine with certainty whether a guest post was paid for or not?

The answer is that this is extremely difficult unless you’re getting guest post links from sites that add “this is a paid guest post” to the page.

Hint: that’s one of the biggest mistakes I see in people’s guest posting approach.

Basically, Google doesn’t like paid guest posts, but there is very little it can do to eliminate all of these backlinks, which is why this strategy still works exceptionally well.

Quality Of Guest Posting Sites

When you’re choosing guest posting sites, you have to pay close attention to the overall quality.

Here’s what I mean.

You only want backlinks from sites that have high-quality content, no spam content, no poker/pills/porn content, a solid backlink profile, and real organic and social media traffic.

I’ll cover guest post quality in more detail below. Relevant Content for SEO

Toxic Content Risks

Even when you post a great piece of content on a site that seems to have relevant content to your niche, there’s still a risk of toxic content on that site affecting the backlink negatively (
find out here how to spot such links).

Here’s an example I’ve seen many times.

A guest posting site has legitimate content about construction tools. But 95% of the traffic to the site is going to pages about dodgy weight loss pills and gambling sites.

You might not see this content on the front page of the site, but that’s a good indication that guest posting on the site could have negative impacts.

Cost Vs. Benefit

You won’t believe the crazy prices some website owners expect for guest posting.

I’ve seen people requesting $1,000 for guest posts on a site with less than 1,000 monthly visitors.

But even with more realistically priced opportunities, there is always the chance that you invest money and don’t see much of a search ranking improvement.

You can reduce that risk by negotiating better deals, but the best thing you can do is ensure that you only get high-quality guest post links.

More on that shortly.

Niche Relevance

Another common mistake I see people make is that they will take every single guest posting opportunity no matter what site it’s from.

Here’s the problem.

If you’re trying to improve the search rankings for a local construction website, then a paid guest post on a yoga website isn’t going to be hugely valuable.

There’s even a good chance that Google can identify that kind of guest post backlink as spammy, which could negatively impact your rankings.

The more niche and industry-relevant backlinks are, the better the SEO ranking effects will be (check out this info on niche relevance).

These are all real risks, and I want to show you next how you can mitigate them with my proven quality control methods.

How To Identify Quality Guest Post Opportunities?

Here are five of the most important considerations when it comes to evaluating guest posting opportunities.

Does The Website Look Professional?

If you’ve done any guest post research before, then you’ll know how many extremely dodgy sites there are.

I’m talking about sites that have barely more than the basic WordPress installation with a default theme–the ones that even have the default WP installation category and tags widget in the sidebar.

Or sites that are based on 1990s HTML web design with practically no sign that any professional designer has been involved.

The guest posting sites we deal with all have modern designs and look great whether you’re on a PC, Mac, or mobile device.

You simply can’t underestimate how many sites you’ll eliminate with this quality control alone.

Avoid Spammy ContentWhat Type Of Content Is On The Website?

The next thing you need to do when evaluating guest post sites is to check what the content is like.

Start by browsing random pages on the site and see whether the content reads like someone actually put some effort into it.

You’ll eliminate many sites where the content was outsourced to someone with a bare minimum of English or with extremely poor AI content.

The worst thing you can find is pages that were sent through a content spinner and hardly make any sense at all.

Sites like these should set off all sorts of alarm bells, and in a best-case scenario, they simply won’t provide any SEO ranking benefit.

What Does The Backlink Profile Look Like?

Once you’ve established that a guest post site has quality content and looks professional, it’s time to look at the backlink profile.

You’ll need to use tools like Ahrefs, Moz, or SemRush to get a full list of the backlinks pointing to the guest post site.

backlink profile

If you see tons of crap backlinks from dodgy link farms or full of poker, pills, and porn anchor text, then it’s a clear indication that the owners are simply trying to manipulate metrics like domain authority.

Truly valuable guest blogging websites will have high-quality links coming from real websites and social media platforms.

They should also have a very well-diversified anchor text profile.

If the site has dodgy backlinks, then that toxicity will flow through guest posts to your site.

Where Does The Traffic Come From?

It’s not just a case of checking if website traffic comes from search engines–you also have to check what countries and what search engines the traffic is coming from.

If you’re trying to rank a website in America, and the guest post site has 95% of traffic coming from India, then it’s not going to be as valuable a backlink as a site that has 95% of traffic from the USA.

You can ask owners of guest posting sites for reports from Google Analytics or Google Search Console to verify the traffic sources.

Are There Proven Search Ranking Improvements?

One thing you should always consider asking the owners of guest post sites is whether they have any proof of ranking improvements due to backlinks on their site.

Legitimate owners of guest posting sites will aim to track such ranking improvements through test cases.

While it is possible to create fake results, it’s still a good approach to try and weed out guest posting sites that don’t provide value.

Factors Influencing Guest Post Pricing

Pricing is one aspect that many SEOs underestimate in their guest post strategy, and there are many factors that determine how much you should pay for a guest post.

Authority Of The Guest Post Website

There are two ways to look at the authority of guest posting sites.

The easiest thing to check is a metric like Domain Authority on Moz or Domain Rating on Ahrefs. Those are good first indicators, but it’s not that difficult to manipulate these metrics, so they should only be a starting point.

What Is Website Authority

The second and more important method to validate the authority of guest posting sites is to assess a few important questions:

  1. Does the website represent a real business or a person?
  2. Does the website have real organic traffic?
  3. Does the website specialize in specific topics?
  4. Do the content authors have credible expertise?
  5. Is there a lot of legitimate social media following across different platforms?

The more trustworthy a website comes across, and the higher the metrics are, the more you’ll have to pay for a guest post.

Overall Website Traffic

The next thing that significantly influences how much you’ll pay for guest posting is the overall traffic.

My pro tip here is never simply trust screenshots showing traffic. That traffic could be coming from cheap and completely unrelated paid sources that make the site look more legitimate.

There’s a big difference between organic and direct traffic, and the more of the organic type that a site gets from Google in your target country, the more you’ll pay for guest posting opportunities.

The Website’s Topical Niche

First of all, guest posting sites that are very niche-specific tend to have higher prices compared to general news sites that aim to cover a load of different areas.

Secondly, guest posts in specific niches will be more expensive than others.

Here are some examples of the most expensive niches in my experience:

  1. Personal Finance
  2. Legal (injury, divorce, etc.)
  3. Marketing
  4. Health & Fitness
  5. Gambling

Keep in mind, though, that if you can get niche-relevant guest post backlinks, the results will be bigger for your search rankings.

Number And Quality Of Backlinks

The backlink profile of a guest posting website also influences the price you have to pay.

You’ll often find website owners who brag about 1,000s of backlinks, but it’s the quality that also counts. Having 1,000 backlinks from small and low-authority sites is not as valuable as having 10 links coming from major corporations, government sites, or education facilities.

In my experience, the backlink profile can be a significant bargaining position if you have the time and resources to fully analyze the links (this is a great resource for analyzing backlinks).

Content Quality Requirements

The higher the content requirements are, the more you’ll end up paying for guest posting. I’m not just talking about the cost of creating the guest post content.

More on that in the next section.

What I’m referring to here is that if a paid guest post site has extremely high standards for content submissions, it generally means that the site's overall quality and authority are very good.

And a backlink from a great quality website is worth more money.

Guest Post Content Placement

This is a very underrated factor in guest posting. Even if you find a great website with high standards and great backlinks, your guest post won’t pass on maximum link juice if it just ends up as an orphan internal page

What does that mean?

It’s when website owners post the content but don’t add internal links to it from existing pages.

Your ideal guest post will have internal links pointing to it from multiple pages that you can trace back to the home page.

And that kind of guest posting opportunity will cost you more.

Social Media And Paid Promotion

Paid Guest Posts Promotion

The final thing you need to factor into the price of paid guest posts is whether the website owner will promote the new content through paid ads and/or on social platforms.

Some people add this as an extra service, and depending on the traffic generated in this way, it can be well worth the investment.

Just keep in mind that the guest posting benefit is referral traffic to your site and not additional link juice.

Additional Costs to Consider For Guest Posting

In this final section, I want to cover the guest blogging costs other than paying the website owner.

Cost Of Written Content

Once you’ve agreed on a fee with a website owner, you’ll need to account for the cost of writing a paid guest blog post.

Some website owners will offer a writing service at an extra fee, but it’s generally better to have more control over the content.

That means you either need to invest the time to write the content yourself or pay someone to write it for you.

Cost Of Content Editing

If you outsource the content writing, then you also need to consider the time it’ll take to proof and edit the content.

See, you don’t want to submit the content only to be told that it’s not compliant with the agreed guest post guidelines.

If you’re going to be building many guest post links, then it’s probably best to have a guest posting editor to take care of this time-consuming task.

Cost Of Promoting Content

And finally, you might want to consider promoting the guest post on social media or through paid advertising if the owner doesn’t offer this as a service.

More importantly, you might want to boost the impact of guest posting by building a few tier 2 links to the post.

This helps with indexing the new guest post and can also provide a slight boost to the link juice being passed down.

Take The Quality Approach To Paid Guest Posting

Guest posting sounds easier than it is, and in my 10 years of SEO experience, I’ve seen this technique make and break websites.

It’s certainly a skill you can learn, and by following the above quality control and pricing advice, you will significantly boost your guest posting success rate.

When it comes to finding high-quality paid guest posting sites, you’ll likely reject more sites you find than you accept–and that’s a good indication that you’re following my guest post advice.
