Quality Control Is The Key To Home Improvement Guest Post Links

by:  Kosta Hristov

The DIY and home improvement space is an area where finding guest posting opportunities is probably easier than any other niche.

Unfortunately, my experience has also shown that there’s a large volume of home improvement guest-posting sites that are very low quality.

And the last thing you want to do is cause more harm than good.

In this guide, I’m going to show you exactly what quality standards I focus on when researching home improvement blogs that accept guest posts.

The good news is that this approach has kept working through countless Google updates, and it’s a process that anyone can follow.

What Makes Home Improvement Guest Posts Unique?

Even a complete novice to the process of finding home improvement guest posting sites will quickly notice two unique advantages of this niche.

1 - Great Potential For A Wide Range Of Industries

One thing I would suggest you do first is have a look around your home and determine all the different DIY projects you could do. Whether you have the skills or not doesn’t matter–the idea is to visualize all the different areas.

These could include:

  • Painting
  • Remodeling a bathroom
  • Furniture repair
  • Installing decking
  • Redesigning a garden
  • Fit new tiles
  • Upcycle furniture

You’ll quickly find this list will go on and on, and it will cover a lot of different trades and professions, including painters, plumbers, carpenters, tilers, electricians, etc.

Why is that important?

The simple answer is that the number and type of home improvement websites you can research and contact is much broader than in most other niches.

By casting a much wider net, you’ll have a much higher number of people to contact and see if they’ll accept guest posts.

Also, I’ve always found that the home improvement community is extremely open and friendly.

The downside is the low barrier to entry, meaning that anyone can set up home improvement blogs that are low-quality and potentially harmful as a backlink source.

More on that shortly.

2 - DIY Niche Has Many Active Bloggers

There are literally thousands of great interior design, DIY, and home improvement bloggers on the Internet and social media.

And they all understand that guest blogging is a great way to find new audiences and gain some SEO advantages as well.

Some of these bloggers are highly established, with millions of followers. It can be a bit more challenging to land guest posts with these influencers, but don’t avoid these people altogether.

The more difficult it is to get someone to accept guest posts, the more valuable that backlink can be.

You’ll have to work on your guest blogging outreach and sales skills a bit, but it’s going to be a highly valuable skill going forward.

Before you start blindly taking every opportunity, let’s first look at how I analyze websites.

The Key To High-Quality Guest Posts

It won’t take much time to get a comprehensive list of home improvement guest posting sites you can contact.

Here’s what I do to avoid wasting time on really poor home websites and potentially risking negative SEO effects.

Professional-Looking Images And Web Design

Home improvement blogs that accept guest posts, whether it’s technical DIY or interior design tips, should be extremely visual in nature.

See, real visitors to these sites want to see what the tips and tricks will achieve and use the advice to create something similar in their own homes.

That’s why the first thing I do is check the images and overall web design of home improvement sites before I consider guest blogging on them.

Here’s the tricky part.

You don’t just need to eliminate very poor design and image quality. Even sites with great-looking images might have simply sourced them from stock photo services.

Try doing some reverse image searches and see whether the images perfectly match the content. Ideally, the images should also occasionally include the blogger who owns the site.

Essentially, you want to weed out crappy and fake home improvement guest post sites.

Overall Content Quality Of Guest Posts

After assessing the look and feel of the website, you need to spend some time reading the content. Typically, the best and most popular content will be listed on the homepage.

But you have to dive deeper than that.

Using tools like Ahrefs Site Explorer will allow you to find the highest-traffic web pages and confirm the content and quality.

A big warning sign is if you start finding a lot of content that isn’t related to home improvement topics.

Stuff like crypto and gambling-related content is often a way for dodgy bloggers to make home improvement guest posting sites look more statistically active.

But you can be sure that the home improvement community doesn’t have much interest or time for that kind of content.

Natural Backlink Profile

Every niche, including home improvement guest posting sites, has its bad apples where owners try to game the system with dodgy backlinks.

Some will try to manipulate stats like domain authority from Moz, which makes a website look more authoritative than it actually is.

Here’s what you need to do.

You’ll need a tool like Moz, SemRush, or Ahrefs that allows you to see backlinks to a target website.

This is what a backlink report looks like in Ahrefs.

You can see the URL, anchor text, domain rank, page rank, traffic, and much more about each individual website.

Analyze these carefully and ask yourself whether the backlink looks legitimate; does the domain make sense, is the anchor text relevant, is there anything like dodgy gambling or porn backlinks?

If the backlink profile looks natural, then guest posts on the site should provide good benefits for ranking in the home improvement niche.

Diverse Traffic Sources

Most home improvement websites will get the majority of their traffic from Google, but it's not uncommon for people in the interior design space to get tons of traffic from Pinterest.

This is especially the case for influencers with a large social media following.

Overall, what you want to see is that home improvement bloggers get traffic from more than just limited sources. They should be able to provide you with traffic reports broken down by social media referrals, organic search engines, direct traffic, paid traffic, and country.

Ideally, you want most traffic to come from the same country you’re targeting and for the sources to cover a wide variety.

You’ll be surprised how many home improvement bloggers manipulate their traffic stats by getting tons of cheap traffic from Asia and Africa.

It’ll make the total traffic look great, but if it does not match your target country, then such guest posts will provide less value.

Never Cut Corners In Guest Post Quality Control

There are thousands of home improvement blogs available, and unfortunately, a very large number of them are not suitable for guest posts.

Don’t fall into the trap where you feel like you should cut corners in your quality control process.

Many people start doing this because they end up spending a lot of time doing research without finding suitable candidates for home improvement guest posts.

If you’re rejecting more home improvement sites than you’re accepting, then you’re doing things right and will be in a good position to achieve maximum return on investment from each backlink.
